Tips For Building Your Pro Makeup Kit

Building your pro kit can seem daunting. Many makeup schools make you purchase a kit alongside the course, which can be really expensive. I only use maybe two products from my school days, as I have tested and tried many many different products over the years. If I could go back in time and not purchase the school kit, I would not. Here are some tips to help new artist's build their kit or who are planning to start up in the beauty industry:

- MAC Discount

Out of all the pro discounts out there, the MAC discount is still the best bang for your buck. MAC products are reliable and will perform when you need them too. Also, client's like to see a high end brand in your kit, and that offers an easy option to purchase that shade of lipstick or eye shadow.

- Sephora Value Sets & Rewards

Now a bit of a disclaimer first: all value sets  & palettes are not created equal. Lots of these sets focus on over-sized or bulky packaging- this is something you want to avoid. Travel sized and streamlined is the goal. That being said, you can score some amazing value from these sets, and many are limited edition, so you have to act quickly. But be picky, don't get sucked in by the sparkle, be a savvy shopper.

Sephora rewards can also offer little golden nuggets, so check them out from time to time. The larger rewards can have a lot of value, so it may be worth saving those points up.

- Travel Size

Travel sized products are a great way to get high end makeup at a fraction of the price. It is also a great way to try a buzzed about product without committing fully or investing a lot of cash up front. If you really like it, you can always buy the full size next time.

- Find Out What Drugstore Products Seasoned Pros Are Using

YouTube is a great resource for learning about makeup artistry. There are many professionals on YouTube who offer tips and advice about products, breaking into the industry and much more. One thing to note when you are watching is what drugstore products they use. Many artist's will invest in good brushes, but genuinely love certain drugstore products. If it is tested and true for red carpet makeup, it is good enough for your kit as well.

- Brushes are Everything

Good brushes that wash well, work for creams and powders and that apply and blend product quickly and seamlessly are integral to your success. Now that doesn't mean that expensive is the best, but be mindful of investing in quality and longevity.
