Palettes That Are Not Worth The Hype

self made palette too faced contour palette it cosmetics naturally pretty matte palette

It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Palette

I was so excited when the postwoman dropped this off. In Canada, it is difficult to get It Cosmetics, so I ordered this palette through beautylish.com. I am always impressed with beautylish and I definitely recommend giving it a bit of a browse.

The eye shadows are all satins, and there is a "pearl" eye shadow that is supposed to transform them into shimmers. Honestly, this is a bit gimmicky and most probably use this one as a highlight, but I digress.

The colour payoff isn't what I thought it would be, and differs across the board from colour to colour. You need to use an eye shadow base or primer with this palette. Also, I do not see the need for so many light shades that all look the same on the eye. These eye shadows have some fall out, and it takes a while to build up the colour.

First Impressions and Review: Lorac Mega Pro Palette 2

Packaging

Lightweight, clean and thin. There is a large mirror in the palette and it is all eye shadows in this baby, no useless brushes. Magnetic closure makes it easy to open and close. This palette is winning except for the matte packaging. Similar to the NARS packaging, it shows every stain and fleck of shimmer. It can look grubby pretty quickly.

Size

This palette houses 32 eye shadows, so it is not going to be teeny tiny. I quite like that the shadows are on one tier, so you can see them all easily and access them quickly. I do think that the arrangement of the colours could use some help. Light to dark is standard, but purply tones grouped together, olivey tones etc. would be great for those who struggle to pair different colours together. You don't want to buy a palette like this and only use cinnamon and peony. For example, the colours could be arranged into a highlight, contour, smokey and pop of colour matrix, similar to how Charlotte Tilbury has designed her eye shadow quads. So lavender, purple, soft plum and gold leaf can occupy a column of four. next would be moonlight, cabernet, black and blue quartz, and so on.

What You Get (And Don't!)

Satin and shimmers live in this palette, with some lovely and unusual shades thrown in. Olivine is a gorgeous greeny taupey shimmer that is at once silver and golden. Tangerine is a lovely sunset burnt orange, beautiful for darker skin tones. Ash is a lovely dove grey and prosecco has a lovely shimmer, a great highlight. The textures are buttery and not too powdery, with good colour payoff.

Repurchase?

I would repurchase this palette as it has lots of unusual but very wearable colours and is a great addition to my kit. If you are a professional makeup artist this is a great palette to have as it can take you from bridal to editorial in a flash. Also, lots of shades for different skin tones, from pale to very deep. I think this palette definitely leans warm, so take note if you prefer cooler tones.

Tips For Building Your Pro Makeup Kit

Building your pro kit can seem daunting. Many makeup schools make you purchase a kit alongside the course, which can be really expensive. I only use maybe two products from my school days, as I have tested and tried many many different products over the years. If I could go back in time and not purchase the school kit, I would not. Here are some tips to help new artist's build their kit or who are planning to start up in the beauty industry:

Makeup Muse: Nashville's Aubrey Peeples

I saw this soft eggplant smokey eye on the last episode of Nashville and absolutely loved it. Aubrey has lovely blue eyes and dark hair as Layla Grant, and I love how her eyes pop against this slightly purple smokey look. Makeup Muse: Emily Blunt

Two toned lippy with a soft winged out eye- there is something about this combo that I find so alluring. Edgy and modern but still wearable. Seeing makeup like this gets me really excited and inspired because

Pro Makeup Kit: Gamechanging Products

Pro makeup kit products
From left to right: Anastasia Brow Pro Palette, First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads, ByTerry Shadow Sticks in Misty Rock & Bronze Moon, Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow and Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in "Pillow Talk"

When I think of my makeup kit 5 years ago, and now, things are very different! From tools to brushes to product to case, everything has evolved. No it's not perfect, but I have discovered some products along the way that have really helped my makeup game and my business (hence the title!)

These products are one's that I reach for all the time, no matter the skin tone or look. I want to mention that most of these are investments and if you are just starting out, I would invest in compact, light weight palettes- but always aim for quality over quantity. When you know your product will perform well, it will help you with your confidence.

Let's start with brows. This palette is lightweight

First Impressions & Review: Viseart Neutral Matte Eyeshadow Palette

Packaging
Sturdy thick plastic houses these matte eye shadows. The clear front of the case is great and doesn't leave any fingerprints ( a pet peeve of mine). The closure is secure and snaps shut- always a great feature with palettes or compacts.

Size
This palette is surprisingly small and compact! Great for professionals, as you can use these shades for eyes, brows and contour. Also great for personal use as it will not take up a lot space in your travel beauty bag. Upon receiving it I was a little taken aback at the size, considering it does retail for $80 CAD at Sephora.  But I got over the initial shock of the size. I think we are getting used to over sized palettes (like the Urban Decay Naked series) that are more packaging than anything else.

What You Get (And Don't!)
12 buttery matte eye shadows live inside this palette. The box says that they work wet and dry, but I haven't tried them wet yet. There is a range of warm and cool neutrals, but no black. These are surprisingly smooth and silky, not patchy or chalky. The texture is really beautiful and you can really see and feel the quality.

After Using It A While...

I will have to report back on this one. I can tell from the texture and range of colours that I will get A LOT of use out of this in my pro kit. If it was just for personal use, I would say you have to love matte eye shadows, but overall it is a fantastic palette that is really versatile and travel friendly.

Repurchase...
I would re-purchase, yes. I do think it is worth the money, mainly for it's kit value. It definitely beats out the Tartlette palette, and I would not have had the need to purchase that palette if I had pulled the trigger on the Viseart earlier. Live and learn I guess!

First Impressions & Review: Estee Lauder DoubleWear Stay In Place Foundation

Best Toronto Beauty Makeup Blog

Packaging
The frosted glass bottle and gold cap look great on your vanity or makeup table. The heavyness of the bottle also makes it feel luxurious. I wish this came with a pump though, as it can get messy pouring out onto the back of your hand. I wish they did a squeeze tube of this foundation, but the formula is so good, I will excuse these minor imperfections!

Size
The bottle is 1 fluid ounce, which is standard for most high end foundations. It retails for $44 CAD on sephora.com.

Pick of the Week: Sephora Disposable Mascara Wands

Image from sephora.com

This is a short post highlighting a great find for makeup artists and beauty aficionados alike!

I have always found it a struggle to get what I wanted out of a mascara when applying it on a client- the disposable wands available on the market are lacking. I have found the biggest problem is that they do not transfer the actual mascara formula onto the lashes very well.

Wear a lot of Black? Try This Makeup Look Inspired by JLO

I loved this look from top to bottom, but what really stuck out for me was the makeup. Sometimes with all black outfits, it's tempting to think you have to wear colour. But for a day to evening look, there is something chic and more sophisticated than a pop of colour, and that's going

First Impressions & Review: Tartlette Palette

I was really excited to get my hands on this palette because it is all matte. I also think it may make a good dupe for the Viseart matte palette, but more on that later.

Packaging
My first impression of the packaging was mixed. I love the shiny gold look of it, but it quickly becomes a nightmare of smudges and fingerprints.

Top 3 Products for Long Lasting Makeup (Great for Brides!)

Waterproof mixing medim

1. Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal

This is always stocked in my kit, especially for wedding season. Basically, you can turn any eyeshadow into waterproof liner with this little magic potion. Use it with pencils and pigments to intensify the colour and seal it to the skin. If you have hooded eyes, or find your liner transfers, try mixing a drop of this stuff with your usual suspects! This stuff does not budge.

Blushing Beauties: Stop What You're Doing & Try This Blush!

It's sheer, but buildable...
I haven't encountered a liquid blush quite like this before. I thought the watery formula would make it messy and difficult to apply, but it is actually really easy to tap onto cheeks or blend out with a synthetic brush.

Product Review: Arbonne Perfecting Liquid Foundation SPF15

I think the best thing about this foundation is the packaging. I love a good pump, and this one works in the same way the Make Up For Ever HD foundations do, pushing product from the bottom up. Other than that, it was really a miss for me. The biggest issues I had were:
